The extraction of the silicide Kb>12b>Sib>17b> with liquid ammonia in the presence of a sequestering agent and AuPPhb>3b>Cl or Zn(Cp*)b>2b> led to crystals of the solvate compound Kb>8b>[Sib>4b>][Sib>9b>]<b>·b>(NHb>3b>)b>14.6b>, which was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It is the first compound with an isolated and ligand-free [Sib>4b>]4– cluster obtained from solution. It also contains one [Sib>9b>]4– cluster per formula unit, whereas the precursor Kb>12b>Sib>17b> is built from [Sib>4b>]4– and [Sib>9b>]4– clusters with a 2:1 ratio.
