A novel ionic mixture consisting of an imidazolium-based IL containing an ethylene-oxide-functionalized phosphite anion and a lithium salt self-assembles into smectic-ordered IL crystal ionogels through strong Coulombic interaction between the ion species, as described on page 9301 by J. S. Lee, K. T. Mueller, C. M. Koo, and co-workers. Interestingly, the smectic order in the ionic-liquid-crystal ionogel facilitates ionic transport. The IL-crystal ionogels provide promising opportunities for their future electrochemical applications.
