Laser-induced bubbles are utilized by Jianjun Chen, Qihuang Gong, and co-workers in article number 1600545 to widely tune surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Experimentally, a modulation depth of 18 dB below the critical pump intensity and a wavelength change of about Δλ = −200 nm for Δn = −0.333 above the critical pump intensity are achieved. This large index variation brought about by the laser-induced bubbles can greatly decrease the difficulty in designing tunable plasmonic devices.
