A monodisperse drug delivery nanostructure based on a polyhedral borane scaffold, featuring diagnostic and targeting functionalities, delivers high-payload of the anticancer agent Chlorambucil selectively to cancer cells, mediated through GLUT-1 receptors. This results in enhanced cytotoxicity compared to the non-targeted parent drug. Furthermore, it was found to localize in the mitochondria of the cell rather than in the nucleus, raising hopes for combating drug resistance associated with Chlorambucil.
