Monolayer Co3O4 inverse opal thin film sensors containing periodic arrays of pores have been synthesized by using sacrificial templates. The Co
3O
4 sensor showed high response to ethanol at 200
oC, as well as high selectivity to xylene and toluene at 250 and 275
oC, respectively. Unprecedentedly, high ethanol response and temperature-modulated control of gas selectivity were attributed to the highly chemiresistive inverse opal nanoarchitectures and to the tuned catalytic promotion of different gas-sensing reactions.
