Monolayer Co3O4 inverse opal thin film sensors containing periodic arrays of pores have been synthesized by using sacrificial templates. The Co3O4 sensor showed high response to ethanol at 200 oC, as well as high selectivity to xylene and toluene at 250 and 275 oC, respectively. Unprecedentedly, high ethanol response and temperature-modulated control of gas selectivity were attributed to the highly chemiresistive inverse opal nanoarchitectures and to the tuned catalytic promotion of different gas-sensing reactions.
