One-step carbonization of biomass can produce high surface area carbon without introducing extra activation agents. Q.-H. Yang, J. Luo, and co-workers demonstrate in article 1604687 how biomass organs control the porosity of pyrolyzed carbon. The naturally embedded alkalis at the molecular level in biomasses are shown to have a paramount influence on the etching efficiency and thereby on microstructure and porosity.
