Temporal variation in δ13C values of n-alkanes from plants was investigated. Two significant decreases in δ13C values were observed in the last five centuries. Variations in the δ13C values are related to changes in the atmospheric CO2. Volcanism and human activity were potentially responsible for the excess CO2.
