Levulinic acid was produced by two-step acid-catalyzed treatment of biomass. Most of the C5 sugars were released by 1st step acid-catalyzed treatment. Solid fraction containing 53.5% of the C6 sugars was obtained via 1st step. 16.5 g/100 g biomass of levulinic acid was produced after 2nd step treatment. Two-step process was more effective for levulinic acid production than single-step.
