14-3-3 adaptor proteins are released into the extracellular environment in exosomes. Altered levels of extracellular 14-3-3s are associated with disease states. 14-3-3s bind to aminopeptidase N (APN) and stimulate MMP activity and tissue remodeling. 14-3-3s may regulate the extracellular release of client proteins. Extracellular 14-3-3s can serve as biomarkers and drug targets.
