Surface alloying of A2618 aluminum with silicon and iron by TIG process

Aluminum A2618 was successfully surface alloyed with Si and Fe by TIG process. Alloying resulted in the formation of hard Al, Fe and Si containing intermetallics. The intermetallics in the alloyed layer were Al13Fe4, Fe5Si3, Al8Fe2Si and Al5FeSi. Hardness of the alloyed layer was 3.5 times higher than that of the based aluminum. Wear rate of alloyed layer was reduced to less than half of that of untreated A2618.
