Alliance partner diversity enables firms to access diverse markets and technological knowledge. However, too much diversity of external sources could adversely impact firm innovation performance. The absorptive capacity of R&D human capital determines a firm’s potential gains from APD. Both insufficient and excessive APD can negatively impact firm innovation performance. R&D human capital partially mediates the relationship between APD and firm innovation performance.
