Effect of nitrogen alloying on the microstructure and abrasive impact wear resistance of Fe-Cr-C-Ti-Nb hardfacing alloy

Large primary (Cr, Fe)7C3 carbides in Fe-Cr-C-Ti-Nb hardfacing alloy surfaces are refined by nitrogen additive. (Ti, Nb)(C, N) with hardness of 27.6 GPa were found in Fe-Cr-C-Ti-Nb hardfacing alloy surfaces with nitrogen additive. Abrasive impact wear resistance of Fe-Cr-C-Ti-Nb hardfacing alloy surfaces has improved due to carbides refining. (Ti, Nb)(C, N) served as heterogeneous nucleation sites for primary (Cr, Fe)7C3 carbides is moderately effective.
