Thermotechnical modelling of hard turning: A computational fluid dynamics approach

Hard turning can be successfully modelled with CFD method. The size of the heat affected zone observed within the workpiece after the process, which is important from the point of view of possible changes in material structure, can be determined. The speed of change in the temperature, which is important from the point of view of heat stress, can be calculated. The probability of the formation of a white layer can be estimated. Simulations confirmed that the cooling effect of the workpiece volume produces the crucial cooling speed needed for hardening in the surface layer.
