Effect of thermal annealing on the linear birefringence of polystyrene, polypropylene and cellulose acetate polymers

An interferometric method was used for investigating the effect of thermal annealing on the linear birefringence and its dispersion of 3 polymers. The annealing temperatures were 80, 60, 40 and 20 °C below the melting point of the used polymers. Two atomic parameters: the resonance wavelength, λo, and the oscillator parameters difference, Δ(NF) for the three polymers were deduced. It’s found that, as the annealing temperature increases, both Δn and Δ (NF) decrease.while λo increases.
