Novel metalloantimalarials: Transmission blocking effects of water soluble Cu(I), Ag(I) and Au(I) phosphane complexes on the murine malaria parasite Plasmodium berghei
Water soluble metal phosphane complexes show evidence as novel metalloantimalarials. Cu(I), Ag(I) and Au(I) complexes of tris(hydroxymethyl)phosphane(thp) were studied. [Ag(thp)4]PF6 interferes with transmissible stages of the malaria parasite in vitro. [Ag(thp)4]PF6 inhibits sporogonic development of Plasmodium at low micromolar doses. The X-ray crystal structure of [Ag(thp)4]PF6 exhibits a regular tetrahedral geometry.
