Rapeseed straw consists of a hard epidermis and a sponge-like interior. Rapeseed straw was extracted with autohydrolysis, acid or base. The effects of the extraction conditions were quantified using severity factors. High molecular weight xylans were extracted from rapeseed straw under alkaline conditions. Autohydrolysis and acidic extraction yielded extracts rich in glucomannan.
