The study presented raises many relevant health questions. It would be expected that it will awaken interest in this aspect of patient care. The push to shared decision making on the part of the patient that is occurring in some areas of the country may provide impetus for further study of outcomes in a group of patients using shared records.

The focus of the comments here are designed to draw attention to research, statistical, and evaluation methods concerns that allow for competing explanations for the results and invalidation of the findings. Despite the comments on portions of this study, the researchers have raised awareness of the intervention's promise. It is hoped that this will be investigated further with special attention given to design and analysis issues that could put the results of research studies in question over and above the merits of the intervention.
