Global mean speleothem δ13C values track atmospheric pCO2 over the past 90 kyr. There is a substantial sensitivity of C3 plant δ13C values to atmospheric pCO2. There is a modest increase in intrinsic water use efficiency of C3 plants with pCO2. Global average speleothem δ13C shifts could improve chronology of ice core records.
