Bone turnover in morbidly obese patients is lower than in lean subjects. Bone formation and resorption markers are significantly increased six months after bariatric surgery. Increase in bone turnover markers is higher after gastric bypass than sleeve gastrectomy. Post-surgery remission of type 2 diabetes may contribute to the restoration of bone turnover after weight-loss surgery.
