PCD-related proteases and nucleases are described in ethylene-treated cucumber fruit.

2 Bifunctional nucleases, 4 RNases and 3 proteases were highly ethylene-responsive.

All ethylene-responsive nucleases were Ca2+-dependent and reducing-agent sensitive.

Bifunctional nucleases had alkaline pH optima, RNases acidic, and proteases acidic.

Protease and nuclease increases preceded loss of cell integrity and watersoaking.
