Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can reduce pulmonary fibrosis induced by silica in rats. The anti-fibrotic role of BMSCs can be strengthened by bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP-7). Strategies incorporating genetic engineering and stem cell biology have a tremendous potential to treat silicosis.
