An in vitro human skin study with radiolabeled cortisol was performed. Reverse iontophoresis was used to enhance the flux of cortisol across the skin. The threshold of detection of active versus passive diffusion was 28–56 μA cm− 2. Electroosmosis is the primary driving force for these flux enhancements.
