Observations to account for experimental discrepancies in Hallett-Mossop riming are presented Pristine flat ice surfaces are conducive to enhanced droplet spreading; rimed ice surfaces lead to spire growth Spire growth is conducive to more frequent glancing collisions and spherical droplet freezing Droplet impact speeds observed to be lower than air speed Relatively higher impact speed on smaller rimers may allow production of secondary ice splinters
