A study of La effect on the long-term duration of Ni-Mg/alumina catalyst, especially under high-severity conditions. The low content of La acts as both physical promoter and chemical promoters for fresh Ni-Mg-Al2O3, but further addition of La over 3 wt.% begins to cover Ni active sites. Improved thermal resistance and sufficient methanation activity was achieved for 5 wt.% loading of La on Ni-Mg-Al2O3 catalyst. A mild increase in activity for higher La loading is attributed to uncovering effect of La on the Ni surface through the growth of dispersed La into aggregates during ageing.
