Protective effect of quercetin on homocysteine-induced oxidative stress

We investigated compared the protective effect of quercetin treatment with homocysteine-induced oxidative stress in rats. Homocysteine increases oxidative stress as reflected by oxidative (malondialdehyde [MDA] and carbonyl levels) and antioxidative parameters (plasma sulphydril [−SH], reduced glutathione [GSH], superoxide dismutase [SOD], and catalase [CAT] levels). Quercetin is also attenuated oxidative stress through antioxidant mechanisms, by decreasing lipid peroxidation (MDA), protein oxidation (carbonyl content), and nonenzymatic (the decreased plasma −SH and GSH levels) and enzymatic (the decreased SOD and CAT activity) mechanisms.
