Highly selective fluorescence turn-on sensor for Cu2+ ions and its application in confocal imaging of living cells

A novel ethylenediamine (EDA)-based fluorescence chemosensor was designed and synthesized. X-ray diffraction and theoretical analysis showed that the probe is a good potential fluorescent material. The chemosensor exhibited a strong and selective complexing ability towards Cu2+ ions over other metal ions in both acetonitrile and aqueous solvent systems. This probe was applied successfully to the confocal fluorescence imaging of living MDCK cells.
