Several coatings applied in biomedicine to iron oxide nanoparticles show no significant effects on size, or local structure. The NPs coated with hydroxylmethylene bisphosphonate or catechol contain less magnetite than the bare and citrated ones. X-ray techniques give a rapid determination of size, shape, structure, composition and valence distribution of magnetic NPs.
