Detection of chipping in ceramic cutting inserts from workpiece profile during turning using fast Fourier transform (FFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT)

A vision-based method for detecting the onset of chipping in ceramic tools during turning is proposed.

Effect of chipping in the insert on the surface profile signature as investigated using FFT and CWT.

Sharp increase in amplitude of spatial frequencies below the fundamental feed frequency was observed after tool chipping.

Sub-window FFT method is effective in resolving time resolution by detecting chipping at cutting time around 17.5 s.

Compared to sub-window FFT method the CWT method is able to detect the exact onset of chipping in the cutting tool insert.
