Tosylates are routinely used electrophiles in organic synthesis. The synthesis of tosylates usually employs an excess of tosyl chloride. Tosyl chloride is often a difficult impurity to remove from tosylates. Addition of filter paper and sonication after tosylation removes all unreacted tosyl chloride. This facile method is efficient and economical.
