The HCCI combustion was achieved on an engine fueled by n-butanol/n-heptane blends. The knock tendency and cyclical variation of the HCCI combustion were studied. The knock tendency can be weakened by increasing the blending ratio of n-butanol. The knock tendency and cyclical variation are sensitive to the combustion phasing. Cyclical variation always shows an opposite trend with the knock tendency.
