Thermal spray coatings show significant increases in energy dissipation for impact. Dissipation mechanism is tied to the frictional interaction of splat boundaries. No appreciable, permanent changes are observed in microstructure after experiments. Approach is demonstrated to be valid even for systems with many impact events.
