Simulation study of a multimode combustion engine in a mild hybrid electric vehicle. Operation in lean HCCI combustion oxidizes three-way catalyst oxygen storage. Extended operation in HCCI mode leads to significant tailpipe NOx. Advantageous to reduce oxygen storage capacity and size of HCCI regime.
