Chemical activation with H3PO4 produces carbons with thermally stable P surface groups. P surface groups react with oxygen, prior to carbon gasification, through C-P to C-O-P bonds. C-O-P type surface groups decompose to C-P ones after thermal treatments at high temperatures. C-P type surface groups confer to the carbon surface a redox functionality. Porous carbons with high oxygen content and oxidation resistance are reported.
