We scanned and compared 36 professional pianists and 17 non-musicians.
Pianists, differing in the age of onset of training, performed a scale-playing task.
Musicianship elicited a pattern of increases and decreases of gray matter.
Piano performance was better in early-onset pianists, especially in the left hand.
The earlier the onset the smaller the amount of gray matter in the right putamen.
