The carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are controllably drilled by supporting cobalt oxide.
The drilled CNTs are used as cathodic catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).
Defects or edge carbons improve electron transfer and ORR activity.
The combined effect of defects and electron transfer resistance on ORR is revealed.
The suitably drilled CNTs show dramatically enhanced ORR performance.
