The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) is often used to assess sleep disturbances in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
In a sample of children with ASD, a principal component analysis (PCA) suggested a five-component solution for the CSHQ with different item clustering than originally proposed.
The CSHQ traditional scoring system should be used with some caution in children with ASD.
Further development of the CSHQ for use in children with ASD is warranted to include additional items on disruptive, repetitive, and ritualistic behaviors around bedtime, more items around sleep-onset association problems, and more items around sleep latency to assess severity.
