Results from both preclinical and clinical REPs can be explained by nonequivalence of stem cells and their niches. REP histologic results suggest a need for new approaches to reconstruct dental stem cell niches. Survival/trophic factors may be useful to reconstruct dental microenvironments. Positional markers of pulp-dentin microenvironments must be developed to assess preclinical studies.
