Spatially selective modification of PLLA surface: From hydrophobic to hydrophilic or to repellent

Combination of inert plasma treatment and diazonium chemistry for modification of PLLA surface properties was reported for the first time. Chemical grafting followed the plasma treatment lead to sufficient attachment of various organic compounds to PLLA surface. Applied method allows the varying of PLLA surface properties in the very wide range. Depending on the grafted compound repellent or bioadhesive properties, as well as tunable (bio)degradation rate was realized on the PLLA films. Finally, applied method allows the spatial selective modification – the opposite properties can be introduced on the two sides of PLLA films.
