Transplantation of a denuded aorta into carotid artery leads to plaque formation. Caveolin-1 knockout leads to increased plaque formation. Additional knockout of eNOS in Cav1−/− aortae reduces plaque formation. Plaque formation is due rather to local than systemic effects.
