We examined effects of gift content and male condition on male mating success in the spider Paratrechalea ornata.

In the field, most gifts were worthless and gift weight was positively related to male condition.

In the lab, male condition was more important than gift presence when males encountered virgin females.

Gifts (worthless or not) were essential when males met mated females, as giftless males were consistently rejected.
