S - and N-alkylating agents diminish the fluorescence of fluorescent dye-stained DNA

DNA was exposed to sulfur mustard (SM) and stained with fluorescence dyes (FD). Fluorescence decreased in the presence of SM and related alkylating compounds. Interactions between FD and SM or DNA-crosslinks were ruled out as cause. Protons caused the loss of fluorescence which was prevented by appropriate buffers. DNA-quantification using FD in presence of SM is possible considering our results.
