Li-NMC cathodes contribute more than 20% to the cost of electric vehicle batteries. ∼4 kWh of energy and ∼15 L of water are needed to produce 1 kg of Li-NMC. ∼50% of the cost to produce the Li-NMC is from the cost of the raw materials. The sintering kiln is a significant energy consumer and cost contributor. A scenario is shown to allow cost reduction of the Li-NMC by ∼19%.
