An alternative process was proposed to further improve continuous casting quality. To model the process, the core billets temperature during casting was measured using a thermo-couple, the temperature distribution on the symmetrical face after solidification was calculated by MSC Marc program, and the hot ductility of experimental material was tested. Reduction pretreatment was applied to 34CrMo steel billets with 1223 K surface and 1623 K core, by physical rolling and numerical simulation, and significant porosity and segregation were eliminated. A small reduction leads to a considerable plastic strain in the center of billet because of the temperature gradient. Large reductions induce cracks in the center, owing to the low hot ductility at high temperature.
