γ-irradiation grafting Na-styrene sulfonate on carboxymethyl cellulose to make gels. Optimum gel fraction and adsorption capacity balance the best ratio of CMC:SSS for was 1:2. The gel adsorbent was applied for removal of metal through competitive adsorption. The CMC/SSS gel had been characterized by FT-IR, TGA, SEM and NMR records. The grafted gel did not present selectivity behavior for any specific metal ion.
