Torrefaction of softwood and hardwood is studied under different conditions.

Solid-state 13C NMR is used to follow the structural changes of wood.

The reactivities of lignins and hemicelluloses mainly govern the wood transformation.

The behaviour of softwood under torrefaction is compared with hardwood.

Oxygen and steam only impact the torrefaction kinetics above 280 °C.
