The size of sediments supplied by hillslopes to rivers is a major unsolved problem. Hillslope sediment size should vary with lithology, climate, biota and erosion rate. New model predicts size distribution of rock fragments transformed by weathering. Size reduction on hillslopes depends on residence time and path from rock to channel. Results show downstream fining can be due to down-valley fining of hillslope sediment.
