ZrB2-based composites containing 20 vol% SiC and 15 vol% MWCNTs are synthesized by spark plasma sintering. The effects of sintering temperature on the phase composition, microstructures and mechanical properties of these composites are investigated. The final microstructures are almost pore-free with small grain size which are due to the lower sintering temperature and shorter sintering time in comparison with conventional techniques. The composites sintered at 1750 °C provide the optimal mechanical properties, including the hardness of 16.0±0.6 GPa, the flexural strength of 565±16 MPa, and the fracture toughness of 8.0±0.2 MPa m1/2. The toughening mechanisms are found to be MWCNT pull-out, crack deflection and crack bridging.
