Microstructure and wear behavior of Fe-based amorphous HVOF coatings produced from commercial precursors

Highly amorphous coatings are obtained from low purity precursors through HVOF process. HVOF amorphous coating present hardness over 800 HV0.3, low oxidation level (0.41%), and relatively low porosity (~ 5%). Wear rates about 2 orders of magnitude lower than the API 5L X80 steel are observed for HVOF amorphous coatings. API 5L X80 steel exhibits dominant adhesive wear at low sliding speed and oxidative wear at high sliding speed. HVOF coatings present oxidative wear regardless of the sliding speed.
