Laser beam treatment technology was developed for producing the oxide-dispersion-strengthened (ODS) Zircaloy-4. ODS Zircaloy-4 with increased strength was obtained by surface treatment to form a dispersed oxide layer. The strengthening was more effective at elevated temperature revealing the high toughness without brittle failure.
