Inorganic arsenical pesticide residues in dry zoological collections (e.g., bird skins) can possibly be quantified using non-invasive swab sampling and ICP-MS analysis. The compounds used for specimen preservation and the manner of their application can be reconstructed using a combination of ICP-MS, SEM-EDS, voltammetry and micro-CT. Mercury distribution determined by LA-ICP-MS in feathers treated with mercuric chloride can indicate the volatilization of mercury over time from zoological specimens.
